Why Improve The Bathroom

Bathroom Improvement

Article by John Stevens

The bathroom is one of the most used places in the house. It is a room almost any guest will visit and like it or not it says a lot about who you are. If your bathroom is only three years old it might just be time to do a little vamping. One reason for this is a personal preference. Over time we get stuck in a rut.

Nearly everyone who has a bathroom that is over three years old will look around and determine it is time for some bathroom improvements. Whether it is just a new mirror or some extra lighting, very few people are completely satisfied with the way their bathroom looks or functions. One simple replacement is to just change out your throw rug, some bathroom towels and maybe a shower curton.

On average the home owner does tend to spend more time in the kitchen. The bathroom is still used several times a day and by guests as well. Another great reason to focus on the bathroom is because it is a smaller space. This means that those simple changes like the towel rack or lighting fixture will make that much more of a difference. Making a few bathroom improvements can make even short visits more agreeable and enlightening. Especially large families that have several people sharing the same bathroom, making minor bathroom improvements can make it easier and more private. When several people are forced to share the same space, things are going to be misplaced or put away where the owner may never find them.

Having additional storage space so every member of the family can have their own spot for their personal items can help everyone get along better. Whether you consider a larger cabinet or more countertop space when considering bathroom improvements, the end result should be more space for everyone who uses the room.

Were to Get inspiration

Before you even start your bathroom remodeling it may help to get some ideas from the others who use the facilities on a regular basis. Your significant other or children should be able to give you some input on what their needs are and what they like and dislike. You may find that your teenage daughter needs more lighting or your husband needs a shelf or larger medicine cabinet for his items. Remember you do not need to go off the deep end. Try switching out the rugs, show curton and light fixtures. From there you should be able to get a good idea whether you need new counter tops or sink. Even toilets can be a big deal. Some sit too low to the ground for taller people. Simple items like this can make a big difference.

You probably already know what is kept in cabinet drawers or on their shelves, and possibly by adding an extra one more space can make it easier for the family to find what they need. During bathroom improvements, making the countertop and the cabinets under it can add considerable space and there may be a spot for the extra towels taking up room in the closet.

Home DIY Tips – Knowing When to Hire The Contractors

Home DIY

Article by Kenny Chan

There is no doubt that most of us would like to fix things up when they are not working the way we want them to in our homes. Sometimes we would try to figure out what has gone wrong when certain appliances such as a refrigerator or a heater have broken down. In the household, for example, if the faucet is leaking, we will try to fix it ourselves rather than calling someone else to do it.

But there are certain times when we really can’t do the fixing ourselves or sometimes we shouldn’t do it at all. For example, if the job involves potentially dangerous situation such as dealing with electricity, we may want to re-consider doing it on a DIY basis. Other situations such as dealing with a heater or a refrigerator involve potentially toxic chemicals that may harm us and the environment. In such case, our knowledge in terms of toxic substances disposal may be sketchy and limited. We should certainly call in the contractors to do the fixing for us even though sometimes it might be expensive to do so.

With that being said, knowing when to call in the contractors to do the work for us is important. The following are some guidelines to determine when we should be calling in the contractors.

The first thing that you may want to ask yourself when trying to fix things up is to determine if the work requires a certified contractor. For instance, some electrical systems in the household do require a licensed contractor to do the repair and installation work. This is so because the work involves not only dealing with electricity, it requires certain knowledge and skills that only a licensed contractor possesses. Moreover, if you screw things up in the house and when disaster struck such as a fire caused by the illegal work, you may be liable for the act. In addition, your house may as well be losing the insurance coverage in the case of a fire. Therefore, the word of caution here is to always check with the local building code.

Besides, before going full force to fixing the broken parts or installing a new part for the house, you may want to consider the necessary tools required for the job. In this case, you may have to either purchase or lease the required tools from the hardware store. The cost of purchasing and leasing can sometimes be expensive and can add up to the overall cost of do-it-yourself job quite substantially. Some examples are the insulation work for the wall requires a special equipment to spray the insulation foam onto the wall. The special spray equipment requires s skilled contractor to handle and it’s also expensive to purchase. This unique job is definitely best left for the expert to do it.

Lastly, other things that need to be considered are the working environment. For example, some work may require you to climb all the way to the roof. Some may require you to work under the sun for a long period of time. If you are not comfortable in working in such environment, then the job is certainly not for you. Other lease critical factor to consider is to think about the worst situation that could happen to you in case something goes awfully wrong during the work. The not so serious case may only involve a broken part, a screw up job, a not so pretty design and so on. But a more serious case may involve personal injuries such as a cut, a broken leg or potential eyes injuries. Therefore, do take all these factors into account before starting the work on your own.

In conclusion, trying to fix all the things up by ourselves may sometimes be doing more harm than good. If your purpose of doing the work is to save cost, then do consider the number of hours that you need to put in for the job. If the total cost is more or less the same as hiring a contractor, then the suggestion here is to definitely go for the contractors.
